Overview

The Amarbayasgalant Monastery is one of the three largest Buddhist centers in Mongolia. It is nestled at the foot of Mount Buren-Khaan near the Iven Valley in Baruunburen.

The monastery was founded by the Manchu emperor Kang XI and was designed to serve as the final resting place of Zanabazar, the first spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism. Its construction began in 1727 and ended in 1736. The Amarbayasgalant Monastery was one of the few monasteries to partially escape destruction during the Stalinist purges of 1937. Although the buildings of the central section survived, most of the monastery’s artifacts were looted or hidden. With funds provided by UNESCO, the Amarbayasgalant Monastery began restoration in 1988, Zanabazar’s remains were transferred to a different temple, and some of its artifacts were commissioned in India.
