Overview

Naadam is a traditional Mongolian festival with religious, secular, political, and social ceremonies in honor of “eriin gurvan naadam” or “the three games of men”. These three games are wrestling, archery, and horseracing.

The festival has existed for centuries and is believed to have originated from simple hunting rituals. Naadam is celebrated across the country in the summertime, but the biggest and most well known events take place in Ulaanbaatar during July 11-13. Naadam begins with an elaborate introduction ceremony featuring dancers, athletes, horsemen, and musicians. But after the ceremony, the real fun begins.

Men dressed in traditional wrestling outfits take center stage and rile up the crowd. Then horses and their young jockies race to win first place. And finally, the deel-dressed men and women pull back their arrows as modern-day Robin Hoods. In 2010, Naadam was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
