Northern Mongolia is a very popular travel destination, second only to the Gobi Desert. This region is famous for Lake Khuvsgul, the country’s largest freshwater lake. It is also home to Tsaatans, the disappearing descendants of ancient reindeer herders.
Around 300 Mongolians still follow their ancestors’ footsteps in preserving this nomadic lifestyle centered on their reindeer. Tsaatans live in skin-covered tepees and nomadically move their camps several times a year. They stay far off the beaten road, living deep in the forests. With such a lifestyle, visiting them is a challenge. But once you’ve met them, you will see that it is worth the effort.
