Today a very speciol day of your wonderful adventure.
This is Naadam day.
Naadam is a traditional Mongolian festival with religious, secular, political, and social ceremonies in honor of “eriin gurvan naadam” or “the three games of men”. These three games are wrestling, archery, and horseracing.
The festival has existed for centuries and is believed to have originated from simple hunting rituals. Naadam is celebrated across the country in the summertime, but the biggest and most well known events take place in Ulaanbaatar during July 11-13. Naadam begins with an elaborate introduction ceremony featuring dancers, athletes, horsemen, and musicians. But after the ceremony, the real fun begins.
Men dressed in traditional wrestling outfits take center stage and rile up the crowd. Then horses and their young jockies race to win first place. And finally, the deel-dressed men and women pull back their arrows as modern-day Robin Hoods. In 2010, Naadam was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
In the morning we will drive to the National Sports Stadium to watch the inauguration ceremony. The ceremony begins with the Mongolian president and features a colorful parade and several live performances.
We will stay for a bit to see the beginning of the wrestling and archery competitions, and then begin our drive to the horse races. These races take place in Khui Doloon Khutag, a spacious valley just 50 kilometers outside of Ulaanbaatar.
